Oakland Budget Showdown – The Oakbook
The time available to deal with Oakland’s $85 million and growing budget is rapidly running out. By law, the City must have a balanced budget by July 1, 2009. The Mayor has proposed a budget that requires layoffs of 250 employees, including 149 police officers. The Oakland City Council has responded with budget cuts and revenue enhancers of its own.

Firefighters say staff cuts hurt Bay Farm fire response
Alameda’s firefighters are saying they think recent staffing cuts slowed their response to a two-alarm fire Sunday on Bay Farm Island and may have been a factor in injuries two firefighters received while battling the blaze. But Alameda Fire Chief David Kapler said he doesn’t think that’s the case.
