ReCap of Events and News for Spot.Us
There is sooooo much happening on Spot.Us lately that we thought it was time to do a recap of recent activity. For those of you who can’t keep tabs on us every day (but might want to start as we ramp up speed) here is what you’ve missed.
On the Journalism Front
Jennifer Ward’s look at small Oakland schools being shut down. Published on Spot.Us with audio supplement from KALW.
Are politicians using Twitter for all the wrong reasons? The Spot.Us community funds this series produced by SF Appeal.
A touching look at poverty in San Francisco. Our collaboration with Race Poverty & Environment magazine will be published next Thursday. Come join us to celebrate. Finished article has now been published.
Some pre-reporting has started for this pitch which will follow the trash – what happens to a communities recycling. Check out how it works in San Leandro, courtesy of Lindsey Hoshaw, and an interview with an Oakland recycling activist.
Every city operates a little differently when it comes to paying for pleasure. Here in San Francisco, a town known for its sexual openness and its libidinous enthusiasm, consumer sex drive isn’t exactly shriveling up along with bank accounts, but that doesn’t mean potential customers are lusting to spend cash either.
Do you think you can report on issues of Greywater? Click “I’ll Donate Talent” and you might get the gig and all the money we’ve raised so far.
Published with OnEarth.org. How can solar panels be made affordable in the Bay Area?
A note from the editors of the Earth Island Institute about their collaboration with Spot.Us.
Other Misc Reporting to Support Pitches
- Reporters don’t stop till they get questions answered
- Preliminary data on housing costs in the Bay Area – for Alice Chen’s ongoing reporting.
- Public Press gets started covering city hall – for their spot.us beat.
- The SF Chronicle interviews a Spot.Us/KALW reporter cause she did such a kick butt job.
- Reporting starts on how music therapy is being used here in the Bay Area – support this investigation.
- Who investigates the Oakland PD? Alex Gronke gives us something to chew on while working on his reporting about the Oakland PD.
On The Fundraising Front
Tons going on with this awesome reporting team, which includes a Pultizer Prize winning journalist. Their pitch is 2/3rds funded (feel free to chip in) and they’ve already produced some great stuff and talked on the record about their progress.
If we can raise $5,000 in the next three months we will fund reporters covering city hall and the Public Press will agree to try it again in another three months!!!! If we can raise the first 1k in the month of June – then we suspect we can get a matching grant (more to come on that soon).
Spot.Us is fundraising for Mission Local to continue their coverage of empty stores in the Mission. It is both comprehensive and tangible.
Getting Social
