Return of the Black Panther Party in Oakland
In efforts to reach out for the ongoing pitch on Spot.Us to do a short documentary on the aftermath of the Oscar Grant shooting we’ve started to go out and attend various community meetings.
At the Revolution Book Store on Wednesday night at Berkeley I met a charismatic man unafraid to speak his mind to the group. As it turned out – Mandingo, as he is known, is one of the main forces behind the revitilized Black Panther Party in Oakland.
In speaking with Mandigo one gets a sense of the pain and urgency that the Oakland community feels in the wake of Oscar Grant’s death. While in communication with C.A.P.E. (Coalition Against Police Executions) this organization is separate and has different, but respectable, objectives.
Some of these include…
- Attend court hearings related to the Oscar Grant case to represent the community.
- Demand that the training practices/facilities of police officers becomes more transparent.
- Introduce a program to give away food, clothes and other supplies to the community.

This is just a start. Soon we hope to have enough raised for Sam Arbizo to take the reins of this story and really capture the communities reaction to Oscar Grant: From the Black Panther Party to C.A.P.E. and more. Your support can make it happen. And yes, his video skills are far superior to mine.
